New report identifies opportunities for research on cancer patients' experiences and needs

Understanding the cancer research landscape, including the gaps and the opportunities, is key to optimizing research investments to ensure that discoveries benefit patients as quickly as possible. A new report from the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance and the Partnership, Investment in Research on Survivorship and Palliative and End-of-Life Care 2005-2008, documents for the first time the country's investments in cancer research focused on survivorship and palliative and end-of-life care.

Global cancer congress coming to Canada for the first time
Partnership encourages Canadians to show support by signing World Cancer Declaration
In preparation for the upcoming World Cancer Congress in August 2012 in Montréal, Québec, the Partnership is encouraging Canadians to sign the World Cancer Declaration to show their support for reducing the global cancer burden. The declaration, an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control, identifies 11 targets to be reached by 2020, including global drops in obesity, tobacco consumption and alcohol consumption. The 2012 World Cancer Congress, which is coming to Canada for the first time, will focus on prevention and early detection, cancer care and survivorship, palliation, and pain control, and systems in cancer control.

Partnership supports Canada Health Infoway's ImagineNation Outcomes Challenge
The Partnership is pleased to join other national health organizations in supporting Canada Health Infoway's ImagineNation Outcomes Challenge.
This initiative will accelerate the use of innovative solutions that have the potential to improve health-care quality and the patient experience in four key areas: e-scheduling, patient access to health information, medication reconciliation and clinical synoptic reporting.

Encouraging and supporting Canadians to live tobacco free
Join the dialogue on the future of tobacco control
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Canada. An estimated 25,300 Canadians will be diagnosed with the disease in 2011 and 20,600 will die from it.¹ Overall, fewer than 16 per cent of lung cancer patients survive five years or more.
It is well established that tobacco use accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases.² To help address this issue, Health Canada is seeking input from Canadians on a future federal role in tobacco control. Interested Canadians can offer their input until October 11, 2011.

Fall 2011 Knowledge Translation and Exchange Workshop
Discussion part of Canadian Cancer Research Conference
Clinical leaders, guideline developers and health-care professionals are invited to participate in an upcoming workshop, Optimizing Knowledge Use to Improve Cancer Care Quality and System Performance. The workshop is on knowledge translation and exchange in cancer control and is being held at the Canadian Cancer Research Conference on November 27, 2011, in Toronto. The workshop is an initiative of the Capacity Enhancement Program of the Partnership's Cancer Guidelines Advisory Group.

UICC welcomes political declaration for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
Position paper released on cancer-specific commitments
The worldwide prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) were the focus of a recent General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. The meeting resulted in the adoption of a political declaration on NCDs - only the second of its kind to address a health issue on a global scale.
Following the meeting, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) released a position paper congratulating United Nations member states for their acknowledgement that cancer and other NCDs are a challenge of epidemic proportions that requires a co-ordinated, sustainable, global response. The UICC also welcomed cancer-specific commitments made by the United Nations to help reduce the global cancer burden.
